CSEE is one of the newest additions to the University of Cape Breton campus as part of their Master Plan. It is a world-class research facility designed and built to LEED Gold standards targeting strategies for environmental sustainability within natural resource industries. VMP worked in concert with the design team to integrate site work, circulation, and landscape according to the specific building program and the overall campus fabric;
VMP designed of all exterior sitework, streetscape, pedestrian linkage and civil infrastructure (in association with Able Engineering);
Of interest is the extensive network of sub-surface infiltration based storm water management elements. Challenged to address the impact of storm water run-off from buildings, streets and parking on an adjacent watercourse, the company’s team developed a series of ‘rain garden’ storm water receiving and storage components to buffer and reduce impacts to pre-development levels. The storm water management measures are attractively integrated into the landscape to demonstrate the concept in concert with the other innovative sustainable design elements of the showcase building.
